Change Your .ko Files on the Fly With Module Loader

Change Your .ko Files on the Fly With Module Loader

Do you enjoy messing around with different kernel modules on your Android-powered smart phone? Being a XDA reader, you probably equate an empty /system/lib/modules directory with murder. That’s with good reason, as modules practically give life to your device by adding support for Samba (cifs.ko), Fuse (fuse.ko), TUN/TAP devices (tun.ko), and more.

However, what happens when one wishes to simply try out a new module?  To alleviate the need for manual file management, XDA forum member D4rKn3sSyS has created Module Loader. This app allows users to choose which modules to enable quickly and easily. In the words of the developer:

This app it’s made for those people that it’s bored of loading manually .ko’s on their phones, or even bored of having some extra weight on their systems folders.
Basically, this apps can read modules on system, sdcard, or any folder, and load. Also have an option for load on boot.
This app was created and it’s working on Xperia X10 mini pro, I’ll need feedback from all devices.

Continue on to the application thread to get started with module swapping.

Logcat No More Thanks to Log This

Logcat No More Thanks to Log This

Logcat is an unquestionably important tool. Not only do logs help end-users figure out what’s going wrong with their Android-powered smart phones, but they also help developers figure out what’s going wrong with end-users’ smart phones. Unfortunately, many of the same users who experience issues either don’t have the SDK installed or don’t know how to get started.

In order to alleviate this issue, XDA forum member Mgamerz has created Log This, a user-friendly debug application. By providing a simple-to-use GUI, Log This allows even the most inexperienced Android users to generate error logs. In the words of the developer:

I know there is an app called Log Collector already but I want to create some additional features.

Some new features that will be coming soon:

  • Three Click Logs – click on a file, accept the preview, click send. (file association)
  • Kernel Logs by themselves.

I plan to update it with more features soon… An idea I have is that it will auto-run when a user opens a file (like how a .doc file can open quickword, for example) that will auto fill both fields and fill out the email information – but it will /never/ auto send (that’s a violation of trust)

Continue on to the application thread. Developers take note, as this will probably be instrumental in saving headaches down the line.

SmartCloset Helps Make Android More Gender-Neutral

SmartCloset Helps Make Android More Gender-Neutral

While we all know that Android is more than a tad male dominated, it’s nice to see that some developers produce apps geared for the fairer sex. XDA forum member masteroid has done exactly this with Smart Closet, a virtual repository of your entire wardrobe. By allowing you to take pictures of, tag, and email pictures of your outfit arsenal; this application help prevent unfortunate fashion failures. Furthermore, this application even keeps tabs on which outfits you use the most!

In the words of the developer:

  • Easy to administer. Make a photo of things you wear, tag them for a fast search option, and here you have it, wardrobe in a phone.
  • Easier to check. Take a click at blouse you liked in the shop and check if it fits anything you have.
  • Easier to know. Check up statistics on what items you wear the most, or which aren’t up to credit.
  • Ask a friend. Unsure which top should you wear with that skirt? Or make it shorts? Ask a friend over MMS, e-mail or by other ways.
  • Plan it through. A business meeting at lunch, Romantic dinner in the evening and an all-night party with a friend? Don’t puzzle over – plan it. In diary with notes for events and outfit’s to wear.
  • Hope more features coming up…

Ladies (and stylish men), grab your Chanel 2.55 and download a copy of SmartCloset over at the application thread.

Avoid the Boot Loop Blues With Drag’n’MD5

Avoid the Boot Loop Blues With Drag’n'MD5

Are you a developer? Are you a theme creator? Are you an end user? Do you have a pulse? The truth is that it doesn’t matter who or what you are; you’ve probably used an MD5 calculator at some point. In fact, if you flash ROMs often, you probably even one this week to make sure that the latest CyanogenMod nightly wasn’t corrupted in transit. After all, no one likes the boot loop blues.

To that end, XDA Recognized Developer D4rKn3sSyS has created a simple Windows application that makes MD5 generation easy! You’re a simple drag-and-drop away from generating that ubiquitous and  tutelary, but otherwise-useless checksum. In the words of the developer:

Hello, this is a basic software, that let you calculate the MD5 about files/folder , with just drag and drop inside the box.
Two version, English, and Spanish

Requirements:
Windows OS
Java installed

Screenshots attached

Seems rather meta for the releases themselves to be MD5ed, and for that we salute you, D4rKn3sSyS. For the rest of us, be sure to continue on to the application thread to get started!

Gmail For Timescape Plugin

Gmail For Timescape Plugin

Xperia owners will be pleased to hear about XDA forum member xeviro‘s Gmail for Timescape plugin.

The plugin will show Gmail messages from all your Google accounts, although due to Gmail application security restrictions, it cannot open the Gmail app directly to the specified conversation.

For the current version, note that no contact images will be displayed since senders of emails may come from a lot of sources other than in your contacts, making the processing of each mail to show contact images costly on the battery life.

To install, go to Timescape service settings, then enable the Observe Gmail Changes. Note that the plugin will not work if you are running Gmail version 2.3.5.

Gmail for Timescape plugin is available to download free in the Market.

Square Game For Windows Phone 7

Square Game For Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7 owners who fancy a quick pick up and go time filler puzzle game, take a look at Square by XDA forum member andre_alberto.

The idea is to keep the main box from colliding with all the other boxes floating around the screen. You need to keep the good box away from the other four boxes. There are three levels to choose from and fastest times win – which you can also share online.

The app is available to download for free from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. To post feedback, head on over to the application thread, to help the developer out.

Waiting For an Inverted Wordsmith App? Wait No More!

Waiting For an Inverted Wordsmith App? Wait No More!

It should come as no surprise that we on the XDA Portal have a liking for themed applications and widgets. Holding a special regard is the ever-popular inverted or blacked-out style. Not only do these modifications give your device a personalized and stylized touch, but they also conserve battery life on devices sporting AMOLED displays.

To that end, XDA forum member B-boy™ has taken it upon himself to create an inverted version of the popular Wordsmith app. While some may think that this is a frivolous application to theme, lighting up those pixels that much less can yield appreciable results for those who spend countless hours playing the game.

In the words of the theme maker:

Ok, so this might be a silly app to invert but my wife plays it all the time so I installed it and it’s kinda fun but it needed some doctoring up.. .. I think there’s a paid version but this is just the free one.. it installs like a normal app but you’ll need to uninstall your old one first, then install mine.. on the stock app the text colors all over were secondary system text colors but I am 99% sure I got all of them to point to either #ffffff or primary (which is usually white on stock roms) but let me know if ya find any black on black.

Continue on to the themed application thread to get started. Your AMOLED-wielding device’s battery life is counting on you!
